Cataract Surgery

What are Cataracts?

happy couple after cataract surgeryCataracts are a clouding or discoloring of the normally clear lens of the eye. Cataracts are a natural part of the aging process, caused by years of exposure to sunlight. Many with cataracts compare vision to looking through a piece of wax paper, where vision is blurry and colors are dull.  About 60% of those older than 60 years and 70% of those older than 75 years have cataracts. Because cataracts can seriously impair your vision, they can limit or prevent you from working or enjoying many of the activities that are important to the quality of your life. Fortunately, medical science has made significant strides in cataract treatment. Today, the vast majority of patients whose cataracts are treated surgically, at a cataract care center, enjoy vision that is at least as good as the vision they had before they developed cataracts.

How Does Cataract Surgery Work?

The only way to treat a cataract is through cataract surgery. Modern-day cataract surgery makes use of high-tech equipment and surgical techniques, and our doctors utilize the latest advancements. Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure, performed at a cataract center, and is designed to be comfortable and offer a quick recovery.

When a cataract is removed, an artificial lens implant is placed in the eye. This new lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). There are various options for lens implants, and each style of lens implant has specific goals and targets.
